Are Encores Necessary?
three of the four Big Shows i’ve been to in the past few weeks have skipped encores. are they becoming passé?
Encores intrigue me! Like, we all know it is going to happen? So it is this really contrived thing, always. Band plays “last” song. Band didn’t play a) biggest hit, or b) biggest true fan hit. Band walks off. Everybody knows they are coming back! WE ALL KNOW YOU ARE COMING BACK. Crowd waits. Crowd chants “one more song.” Band re-appears! Plays their biggest hit or biggest true fan hit. Everybody leaves! I’ve always thought it was a silly little dance. Now I know for sure. Down with encores.

they are necessary and i think its a violation of the social contract for the audience to not stick around and howl for them and for artists to not provide them. that said, nyc’ers are too cool for that shit. they arrive late and leave earluy. smh
